High-Pressure Coffee

In the field of automatic beverage distribution, reducing costs and delivery times is a top priority. This “metal replacement” project transformed a key component by replacing metal with PEEK, an innovative high-performance polymer with superior mechanical, chemical, and thermal resistance properties.

Application sector: Automatic beverage distribution (beverage)
Client needs: Cost reduction and lead time optimization
Replaced material: Die-cast and CNC-machined component
Introduced material: PEEK, a high-performance polymer with excellent mechanical, chemical, and high-temperature resistance properties.

Challange

Metal Replacement

The client operated in the automatic beverage distribution sector and faced two main challenges:

  1. High production costs: Existing components were made of metal through a die-casting process, followed by machining on CNC equipment—an expensive approach both in terms of materials and additional processing.
  2. Extended lead times: The need for multiple processing stages significantly increased production times, delaying time-to-market.

Additionally, the component had to ensure high performance in terms of mechanical, chemical, and thermal resistance without compromising dimensional accuracy.

Solution

Replacing Metal with PEEK

The project involved transitioning from metal to the high-performance polymer PEEK. This shift was part of a metal replacement initiative, which included:

  1. Design development: The component was redesigned to be directly molded using PEEK, leveraging its advanced properties.
  2. Process optimization: By utilizing precision molds, the component was produced with centesimal tolerances, completely eliminating the need for subsequent machining.
  3. Concrete results:
    • Cost reduction: Eliminating CNC machining and using the high-performance polymer significantly lowered overall production costs.
    • Lead time reduction: The direct molding process accelerated production, substantially reducing delivery times.
    • Superior performance: The PEEK component provided excellent mechanical properties, outstanding chemical resistance, and the ability to operate under high-temperature conditions without deformation.

This case study highlights how an ambitious metal replacement project can deliver significant economic and qualitative advantages, offering an innovative and high-performing solution for the beverage sector.
